Graduate Student Selected to Attend Meeting of Nobel Laureates

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Chemistry doctoral candidate Abigail Hubbard was selected as a young researcher to attend the 60th Interdisciplinary Meeting of Nobel Laureates at Lindau, Germany. She was chosen in the top 500 of the 20,000 applicants to attend the meeting, which takes place June 27 to July 2, 2010.
Originally, from New Philadelphia, Ohio, she earned a bachelor’s degree in chemistry from Kent State University at the age of 19. In 2001, she began her graduate studies at the University of Arkansas in organic chemistry, studying asymmetric synthesis under the direction of Distinguished Professor Robert Gawley in the J. William Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences.
A natural curiosity lead her to apply for the department of chemistry and biochemistry’s Research Experience for Undergraduates program in 2005, where she received the Tony Jude Award for best research. She also attended a summer research program in Thailand. She spent the summer of 2009 in New Zealand participating in the East Asia and Pacific Summer Institute on a National Science Foundation fellowship.
Once she finishes her graduate studies, she plans to pursue a postdoctoral position and travel with the final goal of teaching at an institution of higher learning.
The Meetings of Nobel Laureates in Chemistry, Physiology or Medicine and in Physics have been held since 1951 and provide a globally recognized forum for the exchange of knowledge between Nobel laureates and young researchers. Participants come from a variety of national and scientific backgrounds.
