Why Did Daily Headlines Change?

In 1997, the Office of University Relations at the University of Arkansas recognized the need for a daily news and information site for students, faculty and staff and -- with the increasing proliferation of e-mail as a communications tool -- created Daily Headlines. Produced every Monday through Friday, Daily Headlines was intended to create a more inclusive and aware working environment. Its purpose was to report on timely research, the accomplishments of student and faculty, general university news, campus events, training and more. At the beginning, there were about 1,000 subscribers. By 2000, more than 25,000 people had subscribed, and Daily Headlines became a campus staple. Today, it continues to be the source of campus information for the entire campus community.

Along with the growing success of Daily Headlines has come a tremendous volume of news items to be reported. In the old version of Daily Headlines, readers might have to scroll through seven or eight screens to read the entire contents. It was also visually unappealing in its old e-mail form. To better serve our campus community, Daily Headlines has undergone a redesign. It will still be your comprehensive source for news and information but packaged in a more attractive and streamlined fashion.

What you will find is a much shortened e-mail version of Headlines with links to direct you to the Web version of Daily Headlines. The e-mail version will contain the top three or four news items of the day. The Web version will consist of a home page with photos and images and the top news of the day. Along the left side, you will find Daily Headlines category links. These links include: news, research and expertise, students, faculty, staff, fund-raising, alumni, athletics, reminders, events, recreation, training, campus calendars and a daily digest. You can click on any link that might be of particular interest to you. The daily digest will be similar to the old version of Daily Headlines, containing all the headlines of the day at one site. You will also find a new category: reminders. These are items of interest to the general campus community and will include information on such things as road or sidewalk closings, computer maintenance and more.

Items submitted to Daily Headlines will be assigned one Content Category. The following are Content Categories:
