University of Arkansas to Launch 'Razors EDGE’ Energy Savings Program

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The University of Arkansas and Energy Systems Group will kick off the Razors EDGE energy savings program at 2:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 15, with a presentation at the Health, Physical Education and Recreation Building, Room 311.

The “EDGE” in the program’s name is an acronym for Efficiently Delivering Green Energy. University Chancellor G. David Gearhart; Mike Johnson, associate vice chancellor for facilities management; and Jim Adams, president of ESG, will all discuss how the project will make good on that promise at the kick-off event. University administrators, building executives and members of the campus community who are concerned with sustainability issues are invited to the presentation, as are members of the media.

In December, the university awarded a $22.9 million contract to ESG to make energy saving improvements to 56 buildings on the Fayetteville campus. The Razors EDGE program is designed to reduce annual energy consumption by 30 percent, with a guarantee that energy savings over a 13-year period will cover the cost of building improvements.

The Razors EDGE program will make key energy conservation improvements to the buildings on campus over a two-year period, beginning in March. Renovations will include the installation of more efficient lighting, heating and cooling systems, water conservation equipment, and installation of a solar-powered heater for the swimming pool in the Health, Physical Education and Recreation Building. Razors EDGE will also provide students, faculty and staff with timely information regarding construction schedules, program benefits and training on use of the new equipment and controls.
