UNIVERSITY OF ARKANSAS TO HOST RECRUITMENT JAMBOREE FOR STUDENTS IN HOUSTON AREA — TEXAS ALUMNI AND STUDENTS TO MAKE PRESENTATIONS
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — With only 3.5 percent of its undergraduate population coming from Texas, the University of Arkansas is taking a more direct approach in its recruitment efforts in the Lone Star state, hosting a student recruitment jamboree for prospective students and their families from 6-8 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 24, at the DoubleTree Hotel at Post Oak in Houston.
UA Chancellor John White, UA Enrollment Dean Arlene Cash, and UA alumni and students from Houston are the featured speakers.
"Texas is full of talented students, and we know that many of the state’s public universities are dealing with severe enrollment pressures," White said. "The University of Arkansas has much to offer students looking for a high quality public research university out of state, but not too far away. Many students from Texas have told me the quality of their experience at our beautiful, safe campus was everything they expected and more."
The University of Arkansas offers in-state tuition rates to Texas students with an ACT of 24 and a high school grade-point-average of 3.0.
The jamboree, one of two events with another in Dallas on January 29, will offer information, advice and counsel to anyone wishing to learn more about the educational opportunities and financial aid the University of Arkansas can offer. University admissions officers will be present to answer questions individually.
Amber Carroll, of Sugar Land, Texas will be the master of ceremonies. Carroll is a 1995 Graduate of IH Kempner High School in Sugar Land, and a 1999 University of Arkansas graduate with a degree in journalism. She is employed by Transwestern Publishing as an Area Sales Manager.
University of Arkansas senior, Kelly Combs, a senior education major from Houston, will speak from the perspective as a current student. Also speaking will be 2001 University of Arkansas graduate Michael Beruman who is the assistant director of Chancellor’s Scholarship Program.
The event will feature musical entertainment by University of Arkansas graduate student Holly Gash of Austin, and Chris Lacey, UA assistant professor of music.
Also featured will be drawings for four University Bookstore certificates worth $200 each, various door prizes, plenty of refreshments and much more.
Arlene Cash, dean of Enrollment Services, will talk about how to apply to the University. UA Admissions officers will be on site to provide additional information and talk one-on-one with guests.
The six schools and colleges of the University of Arkansas-agricultural, food and life sciences; architecture; arts and sciences; business; education and health professions; and engineering-will staff information booths and have representatives available to speak individually with students and their families.
UA staff members will be available to provide information about other aspects of the University, including financial aid and scholarships, housing, the honors program, study abroad, and much more.
Families are encouraged to attend, bringing with them not only high school juniors and seniors, but younger brothers and sisters who might be interested in someday attending the University of Arkansas.
