UNIVERSITY OF ARKANSAS TO HOST RECRUITMENT JAMBOREE FOR STUDENTS IN DALLAS AREA - TEXAS ALUMNI AND STUDENTS TO MAKE PRESENTATIONS

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - With only 3.5 percent of its undergraduate population coming from Texas, the University of Arkansas is taking a more direct approach in its recruitment efforts in the Lone Star state, hosting a student recruitment jamboree for prospective students and their families from 6-8 p.m., Tuesday, January 29th, at the Hotel Inter-Continental Dallas.

UA Chancellor John White, UA Men’s Athletics Director Frank Broyles, UA Enrollment Dean Arlene Cash, and UA alumni and students from Dallas will be the featured speakers.

The jamboree will offer information, advice and counsel to anyone in Dallas and the surrounding area wishing to learn more about the educational opportunities and financial aid the University of Arkansas can offer. University admissions officers will be present to answer questions individually.

"Texas is full of talented students, and we know that many of the state’s public universities are dealing with severe enrollment pressures," White said. "The University of Arkansas has much to offer students looking for a high quality public research university out of state, but not too far away. Many students from Texas have told me the quality of their experience at our beautiful, safe campus was everything they expected and more."

The University of Arkansas offers in-state tuition rates to Texas students with an ACT of 24 and a high school grade-point-average of 3.0.

Julie Brown, director of development for the University of North Texas, will serve as the master of ceremonies. Brown is a 1994 University of Arkansas graduate with a degree in communications. She graduated from Plano East High School in 1990.

Jamie Walker of Forth Worth, and a 1999 graduate of Pascal High School, will be the guest student speaker. Walker, a junior, is attending the University of Arkansas on a Chancellor’s Scholarship and is a member of the Razorback track team.

Also representing the student perspective will be Michael Beruman, a Fort Smith, Ark. native and 2001 graduate of the University. He is now the assistant director of Chancellor’s Scholarship program.

The event will feature musical entertainment by the UA student Latin band led by Professor Gerald Sloan. Also featured will be drawings for University Bookstore certificates worth $200, various door prizes, plenty of refreshments and much more.

The six schools and colleges of the University of Arkansas—agricultural, food and life sciences; architecture; arts and sciences; business; education and health professions; and engineering—will staff information booths and make representatives available to speak individually with students and their families.

Arlene Cash, dean of Enrollment Services, will talk about how to apply to the University. Admissions officers will be on site to provide additional information about other aspects of the University, including financial aid and scholarships, housing, the honors program, study abroad, and much more.

Families are encouraged to attend, bringing with them not only high school juniors and seniors, but younger brothers and sisters who might be interested in someday attending the University of Arkansas.
