University of Arkansas National Pan-Hellenic Council Wins Four Regional Awards

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The National Pan-Hellenic Council at the University of Arkansas received four regional awards during the NPHC Southwestern Regional Conference, recently held in San Antonio, Texas. The University of Arkansas NPHC was recognized as the Outstanding Collegiate Council in the region.

“It is a great honor to receive these prestigious awards. It is great for the UA Greek Community to be recognized for their hard work and dedication. This recognition has given us the drive to keep reaching toward the top in all endeavors,” said Wes Weston, graduating senior and NPHC president.

The Outstanding Collegiate Council award is based on undergraduate councils whose total programming efforts occurring between October 2006 and September 2008 best exemplifies the purpose of the National Pan-Hellenic Council for impacting its campus and community through political, social, educational or economic thrusts. Universities and colleges from Arkansas, Louisiana, Oklahoma and Texas also competed for this award.

The University of Arkansas’ charter of the the National Pan-Hellenic Council was established in March of 1992. There are seven NPHC member organization chapters on campus, with 55 individual members including: Kappa Iota Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc., Kappa Kappa Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc., Lambda Theta Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc., Phi Theta Chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Inc., Kappa Upsilon Chapter of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity Inc., and the Gamma Eta Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc.

Throughout the year, the local collegiate council sponsors events such as NPHC Week, Brotherhood/Sisterhood Interest Tea, AIDS Awareness Day and NPHC Homecoming Step Show. Members also volunteer at the Fayetteville Boys and Girls Club, Holcomb Elementary School and Life Source.
