University of Arkansas Gifted and Talented Scholars to Hold Second Summer Session

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - The University of Arkansas Gifted & Talented Scholars Program will hold its Summer Institute-Session II, beginning Monday, July 5. The three-week program engages rising ninth, 10th and 11th grade students with exceptional academic ability and promise in courses and programs that are academically challenging, exciting and fast-paced.

"The academic curriculum is the centerpiece of the Summer Institute experience," said Sharon Brooks, director of the Gifted & Talented Scholars Program. "Students choose a course of study in one of the general academic areas offered on campus. The courses are led by faculty members, and the students are exposed to real and demanding coursework with the instructional staff. It is such an exciting time for these young students."

Course titles for the July session include "Going Medieval: Trebuchet Physics," "Math Madness!," "From the Right Side: Launching the Imagination," and "Acting Without a Net - A Summer Adventure in Theatre Performance."

In addition to the demands of accelerated coursework, the students also find themselves plugged in to college life. "The students are housed in university housing on campus," Brooks said. "They are allowed access to Mullins Library, the Arkansas Union and computer labs.

"During recreational time, students have access to the university's Health, Physical Education and Recreational (HPER) facilities where they can play basketball, swim, run, exercise, and even do rock climbing. It is a complete experience for these students as they see the best the university has to offer."

Graduation ceremonies for Session II students will take place at 11 a.m., Friday, July 23, at the University Theatre, located in the Fine Arts Building. Dr. Suzanne McCray, associate dean of the Honors College, will be the guest speaker.
