University of Arkansas Appoints Gattis as Associate Dean of the Honors College
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Carol Schubert Gattis, currently director of engineering recruitment, retention, honors, international programs and diversity, has been named associate dean of the Honors College at the University of Arkansas.
Gattis, who will move into her new position July 6, will oversee the Honors College Fellowship program, serve as the college’s liaison with the six college-based honors programs, and lead and develop other programs and initiatives of the college.
Gattis will report to Dean Bob McMath, and she succeeds Suzanne McCray, who recently became vice provost for enrollment management and dean of admissions.
"Carol Gattis will be an excellent addition to the Honors College, bringing to the position a broad set of experiences in honors, in diversity recruitment, and in grant writing,” said McCray. “We will be eager in enrollment management to partner with Dr. Gattis and Dean McMath as they develop new honors initiatives and programs in the years ahead."
Gattis received all three of her engineering degrees from the University of Arkansas, has been part of the faculty and administration of the College of Engineering since 1990, and completed her doctorate in 1991. In her current position Gattis has overseen the creation and expansion of the honors program in engineering, which has grown from 26 students at its founding in 2002 to 476 in 2008. She has played a lead role in the undergraduate recruitment program at the College of Engineering, where new student enrollments increased by 30 percent. She also led the college’s highly successful program for recruiting and retaining African American students.
Gattis has chaired three major campuswide committees: the University of Arkansas Diversity Implementation Team, the University of Arkansas Recruitment and Retention Council, and the University of Arkansas Hiring Process Task Force.
“Carol Gattis is ideally prepared to help the Honors College maintain its core strengths while moving forward on new initiatives,” said McMath. “She knows the campus, and she knows what high-achieving students can accomplish through their honors experience. Carol will bring creative thinking and abundant enthusiasm to the position, and I am delighted to have her as a colleague.”
