UNIVERSITY OF ARKANSAS ACADEMY FOR MATHEMATICS AND SCIENCES AND UPWARD BOUND SUMMER RESEARCH SYMPOSIUM TO BE AT REYNOLDS CENTER

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - The Donald W. Reynolds center located on the University of Arkansas campus will be the site of the University of Arkansas Academy for Mathematics and Sciences and Upward Bound Summer Research Symposium on July 17 from 6:30 - 8:00 pm. The event will showcase the summer research projects conducted by area high school students during their six-week stay on the University of Arkansas campus. Students will be presenting on topics ranging from voter apathy in today’s youth to molecular biology.

The Academy for Mathematics and Sciences and Upward Bound programs serve students in grades 9-12 from a four county area in Northwest Arkansas. As federally funded programs, the Academy and Upward Bound programs are designed as college preparatory programs geared toward students who would be the first in their families to obtain a college degree. The Academy is designed to reach students who excelling in math and science with the goal of introducing the students to opportunities in these respected fields and to encourage them to pursue post-secondary degrees in math and science fields. Upward Bound is designed to provide instruction in basic subject matters including foreign language, government, English, as well as math and science. Students commit to the program until graduation from high school and participate in both a six-week summer residential component and an academic year component. During the summer, a hands-on integrated curriculum supplements course offerings in English, foreign language, literature, and computers. Academy and Upward Bound bridge students who have completed their senior year of high school receive free tuition for up to six credit hours.
