UNIVERSITY NAMES REED GREENWOOD AS DEAN OF COLLEGE OF EDUCATION AND HEALTH PROFESSIONS

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - Reed Greenwood, 61, of Fayetteville, has been named dean of the College of Education and Health Professions at the University of Arkansas, effective May 14, Chancellor John A. White announced today.

Greenwood has nearly 20 years experience in the college and currently serves as associate dean for research, graduate studies and faculty development, a position he has held since 1997. As dean, he will succeed Sharon B. Hunt, who has served as interim dean since July 2000. His annual salary will be $135,000.

"Reed's background in developing strong research programs will be particularly helpful to the College and the U of A as we build a nationally competitive, student-centered research university serving Arkansas and the world."

Bob Smith, provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs, and the senior officer to whom Greenwood will report, said:

Prior to his current appointment, Greenwood served the university in several positions in the department of rehabilitation education and research, including director of research and graduate coordinator.

During his tenure, he was part of a faculty team that built a nationally competitive research department that is ranked as one of the top ten in the country by U. S. News and World Report. He has authored or co-authored over 100 professional publications and presentations in counseling and rehabilitation.

Greenwood was appointed by President Ronald Reagan to the President’s Committee on Employment of People with Disabilities and Governor Bill Clinton to the Arkansas Board of Examiners in Counseling. He has served in a number of capacities for national professional organizations including the American Rehabilitation Counseling Association, the National Association of Rehabilitation Research and Training Centers and the Institute on Rehabilitation Issues.

While associated with the department of rehabilitation education and research, Greenwood received recognition for his research from the American Rehabilitation Counseling Association and was selected as a Switzer Fellow of the National Rehabilitation Association. In addition, he has served as a technical consultant to a variety of state and national organizations including the National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation Research.

He began his professional career as a math teacher in the public schools. Later he moved to positions as a counselor and administrator in state government. Since entering higher education following the completion of his doctorate in counselor education at the University of Arkansas, he has administered both research and graduate programs.

Active in community affairs, Greenwood is Chair of the Walton Arts Center Council and Vice-Chair of the Washington County United Way, and he serves on the boards of the North Arkansas Symphony Orchestra and the UA Alumni Association. He is completing his sixth year as a member of the Fayetteville School Board.

With approximately 150 faculty, 1500 undergraduates and 800 graduate students, the College of Education and Health Professions encompasses the departments of curriculum and instruction; educational leadership, counseling and foundations; health science, kinesiology, recreation and dance; rehabilitation education and research; vocational and adult education; and the Eleanor Mann School of Nursing.

Last month, the College’s department of curriculum and instruction was selected as the nation’s most distinguished program in teacher education by the Association of Teacher Educators.
