SOUTHWESTERN ENERGY COMPANY HONORS SCHARLAUS WITH ENDOWED CHANCELLOR’S SCHOLARSHIP

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - Southwestern Energy Company has honored former Chief Executive Officer Charles E. Scharlau and his wife, Clydene, by ensuring that outstanding students will always be able to attend the University of Arkansas.

Southwestern Energy Company has pledged a total of $160,000 to create the Charles E. and Clydene Scharlau Endowed Chancellor’s Scholarship.

"The Board of Directors and I couldn’t think of a better way to honor a couple who have given so much of their time and energy to this Company and this university," said Harold Korell, President and Chief Executive Officer of Southwestern Energy Company.

"The Charles E. and Clydene Scharlau Endowed Chancellor’s Scholarship will encourage more talented students to attend the University of Arkansas," said Chancellor John White. "This scholarship will continue to honor the Scharlaus’ place in the history of the University of Arkansas for years to come."

The gift commemorates the Scharlaus’ history with both organizations. Mr. Scharlau worked at Southwestern Energy Company for 47 years until his retirement this year from his position as CEO of the Company and its subsidiaries: Arkansas Western Gas Company, SEECO, Southwestern Energy Production Company and Southwestern Energy Services Company. He began working for the company in 1951 as a lawyer, having been recommended by Dean Robert Leflar of the UA School of Law.

His history with the U of A extends back before that time. Mr. Scharlau arrived at the University in 1946 after being discharged from the U.S. Marine Corps and received his LL.B degree from the University of Arkansas in 1951.

Over the years he has served as an advisory board member for the U of A Genesis Project. He is a member of the Chancellor’s Society and is a past president of the Arkansas Alumni Association. He was chairman of the University’s National Development Council during the last campaign, when the U of A raised $178 million from 1992-1996. He has received honors from the University, including Outstanding Volunteer, Citation for Distinguished Alumni and Outstanding Alumnus from the School of Law.

In addition, three of Mr. and Mrs. Scharlau’s five children have a total of six degrees from the University.

Mr. Scharlau’s dedication to the University has extended beyond the Fayetteville campus. In 1997 Governor Mike Huckabee appointed Scharlau to a 10-year term on the U of A Board of Trustees.

Mr. and Mrs. Scharlau reside in Fayetteville, where they raised their five children. They are members of Central United Methodist Church.

"The Scharlaus’ contributions to this institution will be remembered appropriately through the establishment of an endowed scholarship bearing their name, particularly by those students fortunate enough to receive it," said B. Alan Sugg, President of the University of Arkansas System.
