Former Bands Director Eldon Janzen Named Distinguished Alumni By Oklahoma State University

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - Eldon Janzen, who served as Director of Bands at the University of Arkansas from 1970 to 1995, has been named a Distinguished Band Alumnus by Oklahoma State University, where he earned his bachelor of music education degree in 1950.

Before coming to the U of A, Janzen served as director of music activities for the Irving, Texas, school system, guiding the music programs of 19 elementary schools and all band and choral activities of six secondary schools. Under his leadership, the UA marching band grew from 112 members in 1970 to 270 by 1978. In addition to directing the UA marching band, Janzen taught instrumental methods and conducting, was conductor of the symphonic band and served as coordinator of music education from 1983 to 1995.

Janzen is frequently invited to serve as a clinician, guest conductor and adjudicator throughout the United States and Canada. He is a member of the Arkansas Phi Beta Mu Hall of Fame, a recipient of the Distinguished Service citation by Kappa Kappa Psi, and was named Life President of the Arkansas Bandmasters Association. His textbook "Band Directors Survival Guide" is still widely used in classrooms throughout the country.

Janzen currently serves on the Razorback Bands Campaign Committee for the J. William Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences.
