First 'Razorback Day at the Capitol’ a Rousing Success

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – University of Arkansas students, officials, alumni and supporters journeyed to Little Rock Wednesday, Feb. 11, to visit with lawmakers and bring a blast of Razorback spirit to the state Capitol.

Gov. Mike Beebe spoke to the luncheon crowd of about 150, reassuring them that he understands the importance of education to Arkansas, renewing his pledge to support higher education as a top priority in his budget.

In the Capitol rotunda a short time later, members of the Razorback Marching Band filled the halls of government with the sounds of a Hogwild celebration. Offices emptied and the balconies around the rotunda filled with amazed spectators, as the Razorback cheerleaders and mascots put on an energetic 15-minute show. As far as anyone can remember, this is the first time the band and cheerleaders have performed at the Capitol.

“The day was a wonderful success,” said Chancellor G. David Gearhart. “The band certainly got everyone’s attention, but our supporters also had a chance to meet and talk seriously with lawmakers about the ways the university is improving people’s lives all over our state. This event was a first for the University of Arkansas, but I am sure it will become an annual event.”

The Arkansas Alumni Association, the Division of University Advancement and the university department of intercollegiate athletics were all involved in organizing the event.
