Dean Of Fulbright College Candidates Announced

Four candidates for the position of Dean of the J. William Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences will be interviewed in separate public forums beginning tomorrow (April 20). The position was vacated last July after Bernard Madison, who had been dean since 1989, announced he would return to the faculty full-time as professor of mathematical sciences.

Interim Dean Randall B. Woods will be the first candidate to appear at the forum, to be held at 3:30 p.m. in Giffels Auditorium in Old Main. Woods, who has served as interim dean since last summer, is a distinguished professor of history and has been a UA faculty member since 1971. Woods served as associate dean of the Fulbright College from 1979-82. Woods is the John A. Cooper Professor of History (since 1984). In 1996, his book, "Fulbright: A Biography," won the Robert H. Ferrel Prize for best book on American foreign relations and the 1996 Virginia Ledbetter prize for best book, Southern studies. It also was nominated for both the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Award. Woods received his B.A., M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of Texas at Austin. [photo available here]
