Day Of Remembrance Planned For September 11 On University Of Arkansas Campus

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark.- Remembrance activities will be conducted at the University of Arkansas to commemorate the anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

The events will begin at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 11. Various activities will take place throughout the day in the Arkansas Union Connections Lounge, and a ceremony will be conducted at the Fulbright Peace Fountain, just west of Old Main, from 12:30 p.m. to 1 p.m.

Sponsored by the Office of the Chancellor and the University Programs, Issues and Ideas Committee, the Peace Fountain ceremony will begin with the posting of colors by the University of Arkansas color guard, followed by remarks from Chancellor John A. White.

Also speaking will be Greg White, student chair of the Issues and Ideas Committee, Saad Abassi, president of the International Students Organization; a member of the UA Law School faculty, and closing remarks from Stephanie Gosnell, president of the Associated Student Government.

The ceremony will conclude with the communal singing of a patriotic song and the retiring of the colors.

Approximately 1000 red, white and blue carnations will be handed out to those present at the ceremony to place around the fountain.

Council of Religious Organization representatives will be available at the ceremony for students who wish to interact with their representative faith groups.

Events to take place at Connections Lounge between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. are as follows:

• A banner will be hung for members of the campus community to write messages in remembrance of victims and heroes.
• Blood donation education and donor sign-up will be conducted by the Community Blood Center and the American Red Cross.
• A big screen TV will be set up so that the many different remembrance events from across the country can be viewed throughout the day.

The UA remembrance events have been organized by both students and staff, including: Greg White, chair of the Issues and Ideas Committee, along with other student members Matt Doyle, Shane Hughes and Katy Short. UA staff members assisting include Mary Coonley of University Programs, Michael Freeman of the International Programs Office and Jim Conneely, assistant vice chancellor of Student Affairs.
