About Face To Be Exhibited Locally

FAYETTEVILLE. Ark. — About Face, a traveling exhibition from the Arkansas Arts Center in Little Rock, will be on exhibit at the University of Arkansas Fine Arts Center Gallery May 5—30.

A lecture by Brian Young, curator of art at the Arkansas Arts Center, will be held at 4 p.m., Tuesday, May 20 in the Stella Boyle Smith Concert Hall in the Fine Arts Center. A reception in the gallery will follow the lecture. All events are free and open to the public. Summer gallery hours are 9 a.m. until 4 p.m., Monday through Friday.

The Arkansas Arts Center is sharing the private collection of original artwork generously loaned by Jackye and Curtis Finch, Jr. of Little Rock. This exceptional collection represents the couple’s careful focus on works that have been acquired during the past 15 years. The traveling exhibition features 26 works on paper presenting the boldness and depth of each artist’s vision and interpretation of a similar form — the face.

Townsend Wolfe, former director and chief curator at the Arts Center, said, "The collection explores not only the face as an image, but more importantly, as a means to better understand the world of drawings and art. We are challenged to grasp both the character and humanity of the subjects as well as that of the artist. The treatment of each selection is as varied as the models selected."

Sponsored by the University of Arkansas Division of University Advancement, About Face is one of 13 traveling exhibitions available through the Arkansas Arts Center’s State Services Department. Designed to be both educational and aesthetically appealing, these exhibits are organized by the curatorial staff of the Arkansas Arts Center from either the permanent collection or private loan. All State Services programs are supported by the Bank of America; the Stella Boyle Smith Trust; The Brown Foundation, Inc. of Houston, Reliant Energy Arkla; SBC; Arkansas Blue Cross and Blue Shield; and Union Pacific Foundation. In addition, the programs are supported in part by grants from the Arkansas Arts Council, an agency of the Department of Arkansas Heritage, and for this specific exhibition, the Henry Luce Foundation, Inc.
