Students Immerse in Soccer and Culture on Sporting KC Spring Break Trip
A group of U of A students took a break from campus life to experience sports, culture and community during the Sporting KC Spring Break Day Trip on March 22. Organized through a collaborative effort between University Recreation and Wellness, Multicultural Center, Student Affairs Retention & Outreach, Student Success, and International Students & Scholars, the trip provided a free and enriching getaway for students during spring break.
The event aimed to support students who stayed locally for spring break while fostering connections among participants. The trip combined elements of sports, art and local culture, offering students a unique way to experience an international sport within the United States.
The day kicked off with students traveling to Kansas City, where they explored one of the city's cultural gems, the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art. The museum visit allowed students to engage with world-class exhibits and experience art from different cultures, setting the stage for a day of cultural appreciation.
Following their museum visit, students took a tour of one of Kansas City's premier soccer stadiums, home to Sporting KC. The behind-the-scenes tour provided insight into the facilities, history and operations of a professional soccer club, giving students a deeper appreciation for the sport.
The day culminated at Children's Mercy Park, where students attended the Sporting KC vs. LAFC match as part of the club's College Night event. The high-energy game allowed students to immerse themselves in the excitement of Major League Soccer, cheering alongside passionate fans.
"It was amazing to meet new students I wouldn't have otherwise met and be able to explore Kansas City without the stress of travel and money taking away from it," said one student participant.
For many students, the trip was more than just a day of entertainment—it was an opportunity to connect with peers, experience a new environment and engage with a sport that holds significance in many cultures worldwide.
