U of A Small Business Center Champions Dream of Prairie Grove Family-Owned Business
After more than three decades on the road as traveling musicians, Rachel Fields and Larry Brick were ready to write a new chapter in their lives. Their search for a fresh start led them to an unexpected opportunity: a coffee shop in Prairie Grove where their daughter worked was up for sale. What began as a simple idea to open a music venue and artisan shop soon evolved into Magnolia House, a vibrant coffee shop, bistro and bakery that would become a true family enterprise.
The journey from concept to reality wasn't one they undertook alone. Fields reached out to the Arkansas Small Business and Technology Development Center (ASBTDC) at the U of A, where she connected with Mary Beth Brooks, the center's director and business consultant. "Her encouragement and insight into the world of business have been a blessing," Fields said. "If you have little experience running a business, have someone by your side who is well-versed in everything you need to do to get it up and running smoothly."
Working with Brooks proved invaluable as they built Magnolia House from the ground up. The ASBTDC's guidance touched every aspect of the business development process, from reviewing purchase and lease agreements to analyzing revenue projections and establishing quality control procedures. The center also connected Fields with digital marketing consultant Rachel Majors, who helped create a comprehensive marketing strategy, including social media presence and Google Business profile setup.
Opening its doors in October 2024, Magnolia House now employs 10 people, including the couple's three daughters and son-in-law. The establishment offers more than just fresh pastries, tea and a delicious lunch menu — it's become a cultural hub where Fields and Brick's musical roots flourish. The venue hosts regular events through May 2025, including Saturday Brunch and Jam sessions, Open Mic Thursdays and weekly Dinner Theater Concerts featuring award-winning musicians. "I love being creative in all my gifts and coming up with ideas to execute," Brick said. "This gives me a platform for all of that, and my children also have a platform to create and hone their business skills."
For aspiring entrepreneurs, Fields emphasizes the importance of seeking expert guidance before making major business decisions. Her experience with the ASBTDC exemplifies how proper planning and professional support can help transform a dream into a thriving family business. "Mary Beth helped guide me and brought many things to my attention that I would not have known."
Through Magnolia House, Fields and Brick have created more than just a business — they've established a gathering place where food, family and music come together to serve their community. Their story demonstrates how entrepreneurial spirit, combined with proper guidance and family collaboration, can create something truly special in small-town Arkansas.
