The U of A offers online training on operating fume hoods in SciShield, open to all students, faculty, and staff.

Fume hoods protect users from exposure to hazardous fumes, vapors and dust. The U of A's "Fume Hood Awareness" training is an introduction to the operation, maintenance and best practices for safely and effectively using a fume hood, including:

  • Identifying the fume hood's components.
  • Understanding how airflow is affected within a fume hood.
  • Preparing, operating and maintaining the fume hood.
  • Proper procedures when starting, working in and finishing work in a fume hood.

Any member of the campus community who is going to be working in laboratory environments is strongly encouraged to complete this training.
