Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) is proud to introduce Tom Caughlan as its new director. Arriving from Colorado Springs, Colorado, Caughlan started his tenure on Feb. 10, and we are excited for his fresh perspective and extensive experience to enhance CAPS' services for U of A students.

"Tom's leadership experience and understanding of clinical, community and university systems will allow us to continue enhancing the Counseling and Psychological Services to support students and the campus community," said Becky Todd, associate vice chancellor for student well-being. "His depth of experience and his collaborative style make him an impactful addition to an already outstanding CAPS team."

Before joining the U of A, Caughlan served as the clinical director for the Lyda Hill Institute for Human Resilience at the University of Colorado, Colorado Springs. He has also held behavioral health leadership roles with Common Spirit Hospital and Children's Hospital Colorado where he helped expand child and adolescent behavioral health services to southern Colorado.

When asked about what drew his interest to CAPS at the U of A, Caughlan said, "I was attracted to the University of Arkansas CAPS program because of its innovative Care Matching Model, which provides immediate access to care for students and prevents the long waiting lists that many other student counseling centers struggle with."

Caughlan earned his Master of Social Work in clinical social work from Augsburg University and his Bachelor of Arts in psychology from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. He completed a healthcare leadership certification at the University of Colorado. His clinical interests include complex trauma, attachment, brief therapies and clinical supervision.

In his free time, Caughlan enjoys spending time outdoors with his family including running, cycling and spending time in the mountains. He values the connection between physical activity and mental well-being, a perspective that aligns with his holistic approach to student mental health.

Caughlan's appointment reflects the Division of Student Affairs' commitment to keep meeting the evolving mental health needs of its students. His extensive background and collaborative approach are expected to enhance CAPS' services to continue promoting student access, well-being and belonging, all key priorities for the department and the Division of Student Affairs.

CAPS is located on the second floor of the Pat Walker Health Center. U of A students who are interested in getting started with CAPS can walk in during business hours (Monday-Thursday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. or Friday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.) or call 479-575-5276 to discuss options.
