Engineers Week Returns for the 116th Year
Engineers Week is returning with a series of events designed to boost awareness and excitement about the College of Engineering. Typically held at the same time as the national celebration, events were postponed because of campus closures and winter weather.
"The engineering field urgently needs more engineers to keep up with increasing demands," said Patrice Storey, assistant director of the college's Office of Community and Engagement.
Engineers and non-engineers alike are invited to participate in events ranging from Donuts with NSBE, Tau Beta "Pie," Engineering Brain Break and Engineering Pictionary.
The tradition of Engineers Week began at the U of A in 1909. Emirra Harris, president of the Engineering Student Council, which organizes the event, said, "As an engineering student, Engineers Week is a reminder of the incredible opportunities we must innovate, collaborate and grow within our field. It's a time to celebrate all engineering disciplines and the community that drives us forward."
"Engineers Week is a great chance to have fun while nurturing passion and dedication to engineering; it also offers a way to celebrate the variety of majors within the College of Engineering and across the entire university," said Storey, who advises the Engineering Student Council.
Without the lively "Stick 'Em Up" competition, no Engineers Week is complete. Teams use all their engineering knowledge to tape a team member to the wall 24 inches off the floor. Teams have two minutes to use up to two full rolls of duct tape to accomplish the task. The team with the last person still "standing" is declared the winner.
