Di´a de San Valenti´n - A Celebration of Love and Appreciation

The great Greek philosopher, Aristotle, defined love as a practice based on mutual respect, shared values and a genuine desire for the other person's well-being, essentially prioritizing the other person's good above your own. Día de San Valentín, also known as Día del Amor y la Amistad, is a time to express love and appreciation for partners, friends and family.

While often associated with romance, many cultures also emphasize friendship and gratitude. Traditions vary, from exchanging cards and gifts to heartfelt gestures and celebrations, all symbolizing affection and connection.

This year, the Spanish Program has prepared a "Día de San Valentín altar" on the second floor of Kimpel Hall to honor this tradition, and we invite everyone to stop by. You can participate by writing a love word or phrase in any language on the hearts displayed on the board and/or by bringing your own collage, letter, card or favorite poem to celebrate love and friendship together!

We invite you to visit the altar to experience this celebration and enjoy some fresh snacks while you visit. By doing so, you'll be part of an important tradition shared by many communities around the world.

The Spanish Program is also hosting a special giveaway in honor of this celebration on Instagram (@spanishuarkansas). Enter for a chance to win a $50 gift card to one of the most popular cafés in town!

This altar will be accompanied by another creative event at the World Languages, Literatures and Cultures Digital Humanities Studio (JB Hunt 207) in coordination with the Comparative Literature and Cultural Studies Program. On Friday, Feb. 14, at 2 p.m., we will meet there to make a collective poem (English) utilizing the surrealist technique cadaver exquis where participants write in turn on a sheet of paper, fold to conceal what they have written, and pass it on to the next player. Light refreshments will be served.

If you have questions about this specific activity, please send an email to Erika Almenara (almenara@uark.edu), director of the Comparative Literature and Cultural Studies Program.

Join us in celebrating love and friendship while taking part in this special tradition! Love is our true nature and the fabric of reality itself.
