Wilderness Medicine Courses: Preparing Adventurers for the Unexpected
UREC Outdoors recently wrapped up two highly regarded wilderness medicine courses, equipping participants with essential skills for outdoor safety and emergency response.
In December, the Wilderness First Aid course introduced participants to foundational expedition medicine. Designed for those embarking on shorter trips or traveling in areas with reliable cell phone coverage, the WFA certification meets requirements for organizations like the American Camping Association and Scouts of America.
In January, the Wilderness First Responder course concluded after intensive training. Tailored for outdoor professionals and adventurers involved in high-risk activities, WFR certification is the industry standard for guides and instructors. Graduates leave prepared to manage emergencies in remote locations with limited resources and unreliable communication.
Here's what past participants had to say about their experience:
-
"The course was very hands-on and engaging. We were able to apply what we learned in scenarios and make mistakes."
-
"I enjoyed the simulations and the labs. I feel oftentimes with first aid courses we watch videos, but we never actually use PPE or open up the first aid kit and really engage in the simulations as if it was actually happening, so it was a very immersive course."
Looking ahead, UREC Outdoors will host another Wilderness First Aid course on April 19-20. UREC members can sign up through the UREC Member Portal, while community members can contact Katherine Miller at kgmiller@uark.edu to register.
