STEM Majors: Enroll in 1- or 2-Credit Hour STEM Education Intro Courses
Fill your spring schedule with a 1- or 2-credit hour activity-filled STEM Education intro course.
Explore science and math from the teaching side instead of the learning side to discover the many fun ways to engage students in learning STEM. If you enjoy this new experience, you can continue in the STEM Ed program to earn a certificate or minor in STEM Education (9 or 15 credit hours) or a teaching license in math, biology, chemistry, physics or computer science while earning your STEM degree. Here are the courses and times for this semester:
STEM 12001 Introduction to Teaching STEM Subjects
Wednesdays 11:50 a.m.-12:40 p.m. or 3:05-3:55 p.m.
This course previews what it is like to teach STEM subjects. Engaging in activities that model effective teaching practices, discussions of STEM education issues and optional school observations will help STEM majors or others clarify their interest in teaching as a career or an additional STEM professional skill.
Fulfills UNIV 10051 requirement for first-year Fulbright students.
STEM 12102 Inquiry Approach to Teaching STEM Subjects
T/TH 2-3 p.m. or 3:30-4:30 p.m.
Along with learning classroom strategies for engaging students and organizing a lesson, student pairs plan and teach three inquiry-based lessons (choice of math, science or computer science) in a local school classroom. This course is primarily for STEM majors but is open to all interested in exploring teaching as an additional career option.
This class will meet twice a week for the first three weeks and the last week. In between, it will meet only once a week (Tuesdays) to compensate for time spent at schools (five visits). Students without transportation will be paired with students who can drive to schools.
These courses have no prerequisites and can be taken in any order or during the same semester. For more information, contact Kim McComas at kmccomas@uark.edu or visit the STEM website.
