U of A Seeks Volunteers, Support for 2025 Point In Time Count to Address NWA Homelessness

The U of A School of Social Work is calling on students, staff and community members to take part in the 2025 Point In Time Count, a crucial initiative that provides critical data that helps guide resource allocation and service planning for those experiencing homelessness in four counties of Northwest Arkansas.

The effort is led by the U of A School of Social Work in partnership with the Northwest Arkansas Continuum of Care. It is overseen by John Gallagher, an associate professor of social work, and a graduate student intern. This year, Sam Statland is coordinating the efforts with Gallagher.

The Point In Time Count, conducted annually, is designed to gather information about individuals and families experiencing homelessness on a single night. This data is vital for understanding the scope of homelessness in our community and helps to identify trends and gaps in services.

The PIT Count is scheduled for Friday, Jan. 31, and requires the assistance of dedicated volunteers to make the event a success. Training will be provided to ensure that all participants feel confident and prepared to contribute to this vital community project. Those interested can sign up through the Volunteer Interest Survey available at Volunteer Interest Survey Link.

In addition to volunteer support, the PIT Count is also in need of funding to provide essential resources for the event and support meaningful community interventions. Donations play a key role in ensuring that volunteers are equipped and prepared, and that outreach reaches as many individuals as possible. Community members interested in contributing can do so via the Northwest Arkansas Continuum of Care's website.

"This event is about more than just counting numbers — it is about understanding the lives of individuals in our community who are facing homelessness," Gallagher said. "By volunteering or donating, you are directly helping to create positive change and informing how we can better support those in need."
