What is RFR?
Razorback Food Recovery is a student-led and student-operated volunteer program through the Volunteer Action Center housed in the Center for Community Engagement. RFR has eight board members who work with over 20 volunteers to recover food from on-campus dining outlets and local partners. With the help of Chartwells, Greek Life houses, Whole Foods, Full Circle Food Pantry and on-campus events, Razorback Food Recovery can distribute excess food to those who experience food insecurity both on campus and in the Fayetteville community.
The three options for volunteer service include:
- Recovery — Recovery of food occurs in dining halls and local groceries. Dining hall recovery entails sorting and weighing food from dining halls on campus. Grocery recovery means driving to grocery partners (Whole Foods and Ozark Natural Foods) to sort, weigh and deliver on campus. A driver's license is required. Recovery volunteers also sort and organize recovered grocery items from Ozark Natural Foods on campus.
- Repack — Create "Impacks," which are ready-to-eat meals, for on-campus Friendly Fridges using recovered food from dining halls.
- Distribution — Deliver Impacks and other recovered food to local community partners, including St. Paul's Episcopal Church, YRCC, 7Hills Homeless Center and more. This also requires a driver's license.
The Volunteer Action Center is a student-led organization that connects students at the U of A to service opportunities on and off campus. The Volunteer Action Center seeks to foster a positive relationship between students at the U of A and the Northwest Arkansas community through its six signature programs: Be B.O.L.D., Dream B.I.G., the Jane B. Gearhart Food Circle Food Pantry, Passionate About Literacy, Razorback Food Recovery and Student Engagement. Learn more by visiting volunteer.uark.edu or @uavac on Instagram.
