Guest speaker Ian Thompson, Ph.D., will be speaking from 6:30-7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 6, in Arkansas Union room 509.

Thompson serves the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma as Tribal historic preservation officer and Tribal archeologist. Drawing on years of experience regarding traditional agricultural practices, including plant and food knowledge as well as land management, his talk is titled "Indigenous Experimental Archaeology and Cultural Revitalization."

The presentation will follow the process of using Indigenous experimental archaeology as one tool in the revitalization of Choctaw stone weapons and traditional pottery. Then, it will look at more holistic work, including prairie restoration, to revitalize other parts of Choctaw traditional culture like bison hide work. All are welcome to attend, and dinner will be provided to attendees.

Thompson is hosted by the American Indian Science and Engineering Society with support from the Associated Student Government Office of Financial Affairs and the Multicultural Center. The American Indian Science and Engineering Society (AISES) is a national organization holding national and regional conferences yearly, which include career fairs featuring employers from federal and state agencies and private industry throughout STEM fields from healthcare to aerospace engineering. Students interested in becoming members of this registered student organization are encouraged to contact president Misty Goings (Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma citizen) and follow the organization's Instagram account: @uarkAISES for future events.
