Underwater archaeologists documenting ancient stone features.

The Department of Anthropology is hosting an open event to host Ashley Lemke at 6:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 20, at the One East Center (a.k.a. the Pryor Center) in the Fayetteville Square. Drinks and light food will be served by Tula at 6:30 p.m., followed by a lecture by professor Lemke at 7:15 p.m.

Her talk will illuminate the rich ancient record of hunter-gatherers left submerged in the Great Lakes dating back more than 9,000 years ago.

Lemke is an associate professor at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, former chair of the Advisory Council on Underwater Archaeology and an Explorers Club Fellow. Lemke is a leading researcher in the archaeology of hunter-gatherers through her work on submerged ancient sites in the Americas. She has also worked and directed terrestrial and underwater projects in the Americas, Europe, Germany, Spain, Romania and Serbia. 

This event is part of the Stigler Lecture Series in Archaeology and is sponsored by the U of A Department of Anthropology.
