GSIE to Host Slate of Workshops for Graduate Student Teaching Enhancement Project

The Graduate School and International Education will host five online workshops throughout the fall semester as part of the Graduate Student Teaching Enhancement Project (G-STEP), a program designed to help graduate students transition into graduate teaching assistants.

G-STEP builds students' competencies in pedagogy, course design, educational technology, communication, classroom management and teaching best practices. The program is free of charge to all graduate teaching and research assistants, and those interested in enrolling can do so by filling out an online form

"G-STEP is a program that will enhance your skillset inside and outside the classroom," said Umer Rahman, associate director of graduate student support. "Led by professor Todd Cleveland, the courses are designed around 10 essential competencies for successful graduate teaching, which are universally practiced. The skills can also be applied in the industry. These courses can be a great segue between professoriate and industry career pathways."

Students should complete the required reading for each workshop before the session. They can access the readings in Blackboard after filling out the online form to enroll in the program.

The schedule and topics of workshops are as follows:

  • Aug. 28, 6 p.m.: Classroom Management
  • Sept. 10, 6 p.m.: Lesson Planning
  • Sept. 26, 6 p.m.: Syllabus Design
  • Oct. 7, 6 p.m.: Delivery and Engagement
  • Oct. 23, 6 p.m.: Grading, Assessment and Academic Integrity
