Senior Computer Science Major's German Internship Leads to Front-End Development Role
Laine Rainbolt, a dual major in computer science engineering and German, recently concluded a highly successful internship with TeamViewer in Stuttgart, Germany. Originally contracted from March 1 to July 31, Rainbolt's outstanding performance led to an extended offer to continue working remotely.
During her internship, Rainbolt was an integral part of TeamViewer's Internet of Things (IoT) team, where she initially served in a quality assurance role. Her responsibilities included writing automation testing scripts in Python and manually testing the embedded agent, ensuring the high standards of the company's software. In the fall, Rainbolt will transition to a front-end development role, where she will be coding in C++ with QML. She expressed enthusiasm for this new challenge, particularly her work on updating the example TeamViewer Qt application to reflect a modernized design.
"This internship provided me insight into a German working environment and allowed me to imagine a career in an international company," Rainbolt shared. "I would definitely consider working abroad now that I am familiar with the process of relocating to Germany and the perks of living in Europe."
Rainbolt also encouraged others to embrace opportunities abroad, advising, "Don't let your language skills be a barrier to your job search. A lot of learning is done on the job or through spending time and living in the country, so your language skills will improve quickly."
Rainbolt is part of the International Engineering Program at the U of A, in which students spend their fourth year abroad taking courses at the Technical University of Darmstadt and completing an internship. Find out more about the International Engineering Program and opportunities for students.
