Ionizing Radiation Training Could Be Required for Your Research

The State of Arkansas requires all researchers who will use or be exposed to radioactive material or ionizing radiation-emitting devices to complete a four-hour, in-person safety training. Campus researchers who have not previously completed this training and will be working with such materials are required to complete the training.

The Office of Environmental Health and Safety will be hosting "Initial Ionizing Radiation Training" at the beginning of the semester to ensure researchers can satisfy this requirement.

Ionizing radiation refers to any handling of radioactive material (RAM) or X-ray devices. All researchers who take part in ionizing radiation on campus must be monitored with a dosimeter, which will be part of the training's instruction.

If you are unsure if this is a requirement for your work, please contact your PI or the radiation safety officer, Brooke Howard-Parker, at bbhoward@uark.edu.

The following are available sessions for this training:

  • Aug. 26, 8 a.m. to noon, FAMA D109
  • Aug. 27, 8 a.m. to noon, FAMA A103
  • Aug. 29, noon to 4 p.m., FAMA D109
  • Aug. 30, noon to 4 p.m., FAMA A103

To sign up for a session, follow these steps: sign into SciShield -> Training -> Course Directory -> select the training under "Radiation."

If you have any questions, you can contact Howard-Parker at bbhoward@uark.edu.
