Engineering Professor Recipient of Fellow Award from International Professional Society

Faculty and students of the Department of Industrial Engineering at the annual conference of the Institute of Industrial and Systems Engineers held in Montreal.

Burak Eksioglu, professor of industrial engineering, was awarded the title of fellow at the recent annual conference of the Institute of Industrial and Systems Engineers held May 18-20 in Montreal, Quebec, Canada.

The honor recognizes outstanding leaders of the profession who have made significant, nationally recognized contributions to industrial and systems engineering. A fellow is the highest classification of membership in the institute.

Eksioglu's research is focused on the area of optimization with applications in transportation, logistics, supply chain management and healthcare.

His research has been sponsored by, among others, the U.S. Department of Transportation, U.S. Department of Homeland Security, NASA, and the industry. He is a member of the Tau Beta Pi Honor Society, INFORMS, IISE, ASEE and POMS.

Eksioglu has received numerous teaching and research awards such as the Best Application Paper Award from IISE Transactions, Bagley College of Engineering Faculty Research Award, and Excellence in the Teaching of Operations Research from IISE.

He has a doctorate in industrial and systems engineering from the University of Florida, a master's degree in engineering business management from the University of Warwick in the United Kingdom, and a bachelor's degree in industrial engineering from Bogazici University in Turkey. He joined the Department of Industrial Engineering in 2019.

Student Chapter Recognition

The student chapter of the Institute of Industrial and Systems Engineers at the University of Arkansas received the Chapter Gold Award, evidence of their excellence and dedication. Earlier this year, they successfully hosted the IISE South-Central Regional Conference. This achievement not only highlighted their organizational expertise but also solidified their reputation as an award-winning chapter within the IISE community.

  • Lauren Jones, senior, was awarded the UPS Scholarship for Female Students.
  • Luke Smith presented his team's capstone project in the Outstanding IISE Capstone Senior Design Project Showcase. The project, Delivery Zone Definition with K-Medoids Clustering and Integer Programming, sponsored by J.B. Hunt, received the Project of The Year award at the annual Department of Industrial Engineering Capstone Symposium held in early May.
  • Nathanael Harris and James Fite also presented their team's capstone project in the Outstanding IISE Capstone Senior Design Project Showcase. The project, Applying Markov Decision Processes to Optimize Aggregate Workforce Planning with Uncertain Funding Conditions, supported by Infinity Labs LLC, received the Outstanding Achievement in Modeling Award at the Department of Industrial Engineering Capstone Symposium.
  • Department alumnus Colin Small was the recipient of the Pritzker Doctoral Dissertation Award for his Doctoral Dissertation. He is completing his degree at the University of Texas–Austin.
