Department of World Languages, Literatures and Cultures Celebrates Students' Success Awards

The World Languages & Digital Humanities Studio hosted their second Student Success Awards Reception for the Department of World Languages, Literatures and Cultures on May 1. 

Awardees consisted of WLLC faculty, graduate and undergraduate students who were awarded Student Success funds to complete a collaborative research project, organize a pedagogical workshop, engage with undergraduate interns or travel to a conference focused on high impact practices. 

Here is a brief sampling of the over 50 initiatives that were selected to receive Student Success awards:  

• Alexandra Hagen (Travel Award and Workshop Award): 

• ACTFL, November 2024 Presentation: "Bist du auf Insta?: New Pathways to Student Outreach via Social Media" 

• Heinrich-Heine Universität Düsseldorf, March 2024 Presentation: "Ausloten-Medienwissenschaft in Zeiten der Klimakatastrophe"  

• Fall 2024 Workshop: Empathy & Compassion in the Foreign Language Classroom Through Yoga/Meditation  

• Li Yang (Workshop Award): "Celebration of Spring & The 1st Chinese Typing Contest" 

• Motoko Miura (Travel Award): ACTFL 2024 - "Digital Storytelling for Language, Cultural, and Technological Proficiency" 

• Greg Buchanan (Travel Award and Workshop Award): "WCU Cherokee Language Summit and Cherokee Guest Lectures"  

• Brenda Magnetti, Daniela D'Eugenio, Isidoro Villa Ligero (Translinguistic Collaborative Award): "Collaborative Strategies to Improve Speaking and Presentational Skills" 

Additionally, four undergraduate students were awarded an Undergraduate Internship Award:

• Avery Antill, Arabic (recommended by Paula Haydar): Undergraduate Liaison, Salaam wa Kalaam Coordinator & Arabic Cultural Event Series Coordinator 

• Alessandro Palazzuoli-Bevilacqua, Italian (recommended by Ryan Calabretta-Sajder): Tontitown Historical Museum Curatorial Internship 

• Nahomi Gonzalez Piñeda, Spanish (recommended by Raquel Castros): Sìn Lìmites Biliteracy Program  

• Isaiah Nies, WLDH Studio (recommended by Cheyenne Roy): Digital Humanities Researcher & VR Classroom Developer
