Registration Open for New U of A Summer Storytelling Camp
The U of A Clinic for Literacy is hosting a Summer Storytelling Camp on campus July 8-19.
Registration is open now for students who will have completed fourth through eighth grades.
Storytelling camp will focus on reading comprehension as a bridge to writing. Students will produce a creative writing piece, such as a graphic novel or other arts-integrated product. The literacy clinic, based in the College of Education and Health Professions, is partnering with the U of A Museum so students have access to museum collections for research and writing inspiration.
The museum houses a wide array of materials across time and space — from meteorites and dinosaurs to ancient Roman coins and the first computers.
"We are excited to once again partner with the U of A Museum to offer this enriching literacy opportunity for middle-grade students who want to build on their reading and writing skills over the summer. This camp will be a great balance of museum-based research and individual creativity," said Kristi Mascher, a teaching assistant professor and programming coordinator for the literacy clinic within the Department of Curriculum and Instruction.
The camp will be taught in conjunction with candidates from the department's K-6 Elementary and Secondary Education programs.
The U of A Clinic for Literacy offers support to pre-service and in-service teachers through the use of materials, assessments and curriculum. It serves its community of learners by providing high-quality and research-based literacy programming.
