Celebrate Earth Week at the U of A

The U of A is proud to celebrate Earth Day on Monday, April 22, and the entire campus community can play a part to help our planet.

Throughout the week, the U of A will host a wide range of events for students, faculty and staff to engage in environmentally responsible activities.

Earth Day, the annual international event demonstrating support for environmental protection, was established in 1970 and is celebrated in 192 countries each year. It is always celebrated on April 22 and has grown into a full week’s celebration known as Earth Week.

“Earth Week is the perfect opportunity to acknowledge the progress we’ve made while educating our community about the challenges ahead,” said Eric Boles, director of the Office for Sustainability.

Earth Day is widely recognized as the largest secular observance in the world, celebrated by more than a billion people every year. It is a day for humanity to celebrate our common home and to recommit ourselves to restoring and protecting the home of our children.

Monday

Earth Week will kick off Monday, April 22, with a Sustainable Design Exhibition from 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. at Vol Walker Hall’s second floor gallery, as well as sustainability minor capstone poster presentations. At the same time, there will be an Earth Day Involvement Fair at the Union Mall, which will feature multiple registered student organizations (RSOs) from different areas of campus. This fair will be a great opportunity for RSOs to spread the word about their organizations and a great opportunity for students to meet new individuals and get involved in organizations on campus. And the last event on Earth Day is Students Advocating for the Environment’s ecobricking workshop from 12-3 p.m. at ARKU 201.

Tuesday

At 5:30 p.m. Razorback Food Recovery is hosting a cooking matters class that will focus on locally sourced foods. And that evening, there will be a movie night with Hogs for Health, and they will be watching Erin Brockovich.

Wednesday

On Wednesday, Razorback Food Recovery is hosting a scrape the plate event at the Fulbright Dining Hall, where they will be bringing awareness about campus food waste. That afternoon University Programs is hosting Spring Carnival, a celebration of spring on campus!

Thursday

Start your Thursday morning off right with Bagels and Bags hosted by Razorback Food Recovery, where they will have bagels catered and are making up-cycled tote bags from old RFR T-shirts. That afternoon, there is Future Earth and Bike Festival happening at the Union Mall from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. This will feature sustainability focused RSOs and vendors, live screen printing, live music, food and more!

Friday

Help clean up Mullins Creek on campus with the Watershed Resource Conservation Center from 1-2:30 p.m.; they will provide trash grabbers, trash bags and drinks! Also happening Friday is Razorback Food Recovery’s 10th Birthday celebration from 3-5 p.m. at the ARKU room 201.
