Celebrate Arkansas Archeology Month
March is Archeology Month in Arkansas! Each year the Arkansas Archeological Survey and the Arkansas Archeological Society team up to put together a schedule of archeology-themed events across the state of Arkansas! This year there are 45 events taking place at state parks, survey research stations, libraries, historical societies, museums and other locations throughout the state. These range from presentations about archeological research to museum displays to flintknapping demonstrations.
We are also hosting two Celebrate Archeology Days (one at Parkin Archeological State Park on March 2 and one in Fayetteville with the University of Arkansas Museum on March 23) where anyone can come out and see booths about different archeological topics, talk to archeologists about artifacts and try their hand at spear throwing, as well as a variety of other family friendly, hands-on activities.
We also create an Archeology Month poster to celebrate a particular aspect of archeology each year. This year we are celebrating "Visualizing the Past" using remote sensing technologies. Our poster shows how four different mapping techniques can be layered together to help us get a better sense of how an archeological site was created. You can read a full article with sources about the poster images on the survey's website.
Archeologists and volunteers across the state love putting on events for Archeology Month and sharing all of the cool information that we've learned about our state's history through archeology. We hope that you will come out and join us at one or more of our events to Celebrate Archeology in Arkansas this March.
