Engine Week Returns for Its 115th Year
Engine Week is back with several events aimed at raising awareness and excitement about the College of Engineering. "The engineering profession is in dire need of more engineers to meet the growing demands," said Patrice Storey, assistant director of the Office of Community and Engagement.
Engineers and non-engineers alike are invited to participate in events ranging from Donuts with the Deans, Tau Beta "Pie" and an Engineering RSO Fair.
The tradition of Engine Week began at the U of A in 1909. Colton Gattis, president of the Engineering Student Council, which organizes the event, said, "As a first-generation engineering student, Engine Week's celebration of all engineering disciplines highlights the boundless opportunities of innovation and community within our field."
"Engine Week is an excellent opportunity to have fun while fostering and cultivating passion and dedication to engineering; additionally, it serves as one way for us to celebrate the diverse majors within the College of Engineering and the entire university," said Storey and Thomas Carter, who advise the Engineering Student Council.
Without the lively "Stick 'Em Up" competition, no Engine Week would be complete. Three Stick 'Em Up rounds were held on Tuesday, Feb. 20. Students had to use all their engineering knowledge to tape a team member to the wall 24 inches off the floor. Teams had five minutes to use up to three full rolls of duct tape to accomplish the task. The team, with the last person still "standing," thanks to a creative tape job, was declared the winner. Team Duck DynastIE, which consisted of students from Industrial Engineering, won all three rounds. Go to the Engine Week Hub.
