Libraries Provide Guidance on Using Artificial Intelligence in Higher Education

The University Libraries, in coordination with the office of Academic Initiatives and Integrity, have created a research guide titled AI and Academic Integrity that is free and open to the campus community and beyond online. As the use of AI becomes increasingly common, this guide serves to provide definitions, ethical considerations, instructions for citing AI sources and precautions that should be taken when using AI in an academic setting.

"It is important to the libraries that we are able to provide support for best practices in research," said Lora Lennertz, director for Open Education, Data, and Publishing Services. "AI can be a fabulous tool for improving our research experience, … but like any other tool, it is best to use it wisely."

Students must check with their instructors before using AI in coursework to ensure that doing so is appropriate for that course. It is also important to fact-check any information received through the use of AI, as these tools have been known to fabricate data. To avoid plagiarism, AI sources must be properly cited whenever they are used.
