Call for Entries for the Native & Indigenous Art Exhibit We Are Still Here
The University of Arkansas Multicultural Center and the Native American Student Association announce an open call for entries for the Native & Indigenous Art Exhibit – We are Still Here (Self Portraits).
All University of Arkansas Native and Indigenous students, staff, faculty and alumni, including Native citizens and descendants, are encouraged to submit works of artistic expression and/or self portrait in any medium for inclusion in this campuswide celebration and showcase of the thriving Native and Indigenous campus community.
The gallery exhibit will be hosted in the Anne Kittrell Gallery, a part of the Multicultural Center, on 4th floor of the Arkansas Union starting Nov. 16 as a part Native American Heritage Month, and run through the end of the semester.
Exhibit Statement: Native American Heritage Month is the opportunity for University of Arkansas Native and Indigenous students, staff, faculty, and alumni, including Native citizens and descendants to represent themselves through art and self portrait. The works presented will reaffirm the statement "We are Still Here" and express Native and Indigenous representation across our campus community.
"Historically, art has played such an integral role in each distinct culture represented in our Indigenous community on campus; for some of us, art mediums have been passed down for generations, and for others, it is just being learned. It is important that we celebrate both the survival and revitalization of our artistic expression, as art-from beadwork to weaving to painting-is representative of our resiliency and connection to the earth, our spirituality, and each other."
— Hailey Hoog (Cherokee Citizen-Honors College Fellow.)
Mediums: All works will be accepted including self-portraits, poetry, digital art, video, photography, and 3D Art.
Submission Process: Submission dates: Please submit portraits in jpeg or tiff format or representations of artwork you plan to display by Friday, Nov. 10, via email to Emerald Hames, associate director of inclusive career design, at ehames@uark.edu or Bethany Kiele, assistant Curator Multicultural Center–Arts & Culture, at bkiele@uark.edu.
