Anthony Julian Tamburri to Lecture on Martin Scorsese's Mean Streets

Anthony Julian Tamburri, Distinguished Professor of European languages and literatures at the CUNY/Queens College and dean of the John D. Calandra Italian American Institute, will give a lecture on "What Does Martin Scorsese 'Mean' in Mean Streets?"

Tamburri will explore how Scorsese utilizes "code-switching" and discuss how the "informed" Italian/American spectator, as well as the non-Italian spectator, enter the film diversely. Through a semiotic examination, Tamburri argues that the Italian/American spectator embraces a more reflective viewing experience as he/she/they cannot only relate to many of the characters, but actually see themselves in the likes of Charlie and Johnny Boy.

The lecture will take place at 4 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 24, in J.B. Hunt Center of Excellence, room 148.
