Thirty-seven years ago, when professor Molly Rapert began teaching, she was under the mistaken illusion that effective teaching solely meant she could convey the content. It was many years before she understood how important it was to set expectations, match her assessments to her goals, establish the proper classroom environment that fit her authentically, have a syllabus that was a binding contract that would handle all of her worst-case-scenario situations and more.

In this workshop, we will focus on key elements of the classroom that are critical in providing the expectations, environment and performance that you hope to achieve. Based on crowdsourcing from 30 award-winning professors, Rapert will walk participants through a process of identifying and implementing the aspects most relevant to each individual to help participants structure their teaching around their personal strengths.

Rapert leads the Walton Center for Teaching Effectiveness (a collaborator for this event), is a member of the Teaching Academy and is a strong advocate in helping to expand teaching expertise on the U of A campus. She has won numerous teaching awards, including the Charles and Nadine Baum Excellence in Teaching Award, the Arkansas Alumni Outstanding Teaching Award and the Marketing Management Association's National Outstanding Teaching Award. She teaches the capstone course in the Marketing Department, which prepares students for the real-world environment they will soon walk into. Rapert has taught courses at all levels, from freshmen to doctoral seminars and of all class sizes, from large auditoriums to small seminars.

Teaching Portfolio Opportunity:  Each one of our 2023-24 New Faculty Sessions will offer opportunities to write a chapter in a portfolio that can be used for evaluation or promotion/tenure activities. Teaching Academy members will be on hand to provide guidance for the portfolios at each luncheon. The Teaching Academy is serving as a collaborator for these events.
