Department of Music Welcomes New Saxophone Professor

The Department of Music is thrilled to welcome Sarah Hetrick as the new assistant professor of saxophone. Hetrick comes to the U of A from Texas A&M International University, where she taught applied saxophone and woodwind methods.

Holding both a Master of Music degree and a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in saxophone performance from the University of Texas at Austin, she was both a University Fellow and the saxophone teaching assistant. Prior to graduate study, Hetrick graduated summa cum laude with a Bachelor of Science degree in music education from Indiana University of Pennsylvania. She was also a recipient of the Rainwater Grant for Innovation in Music, the Presser Award, the PEO Scholar Award and UT's prestigious University Fellowship.

When asked what motivated her as a teacher, Hetrick was quick to point out her students. "Witnessing the growth and joy students experience in the process of working towards their goals is exciting!" she said. "Really, my students are some of my greatest teachers, inspiring me with their innovative ideas and creativity."

Hetrick is a big believer that music has the power to be positively transformational for all involved. "Whatever path [students'] career and artistic endeavors take, I hope that our time together illuminates the value of connecting and collaborating with others; of pursuing goals, ideas and knowledge; and of leading a musical life, in whatever form," she said.

Considering she's spent several years in Laredo, Texas, Hetrick says she's really looking forward to spending more time outdoors and having four seasons again. "I grew up in Pennsylvania but have been in Texas for quite a while. I have really missed fall and snow!"

She is also wanting to get involved in the Northwest Arkansas arts community. "I am really looking forward to meeting and engaging with the arts, music and educational communities here," she said. "I cannot wait to collaborate with the brilliant students and colleagues here at the University of Arkansas!"
