The Filipino Students Organization presents "Tinikling Tayo!" a celebration of Filipino culture, food and music starting at 5:30 p.m. Friday, April 21, on the Union Mall. Currently enrolled U of A students can attend the event free of charge.

"Tinikling" is a traditional folk dance originating in the Philippines that involves dancers stepping in and out of two bamboo sticks that tap and slide across the ground. A presentation of tinikling will be performed by members of the Filipino Students Organization, and an open invitation to learn the dance will be given to the student body afterwards. Along with music and dance, there will be traditional Filipino cuisine catered by "It's Sa Wrap," a local Filipino restaurant based in the Northwest Arkansas Mall. So, please join us on this beautiful spring day filled with music, food and dance!

Tinikling has been a staple dance in Filipino culture and is commonly performed on special occasions such as during Filipino Independence Day. The word "tinikling" is in reference to tiklings, which are birds that rice farmers would see while working out on the fields. The dance movements are imitations of the elegance and speed the birds would display walking between grass stems, running over branches and avoiding traps laid in the fields. The Filipino Students Organization wish to share this experience with U of A students and invite them to learn about Filipino culture through song and dance!

This event is supported by the Student Activities Fee as a funded event by the Associated Student Government and is free to all currently enrolled University of Arkansas, Fayetteville, students who pay the student activities fee. This event is held in a venue that meets ADA standards. Individuals with disabilities are encouraged to attend this event. If you require a reasonable accommodation in order to participate in this event, please contact FSO President Lyncelle Sumilang via email at lvsumila@uark.edu, 479-575-5255, by five business days prior to the event.
