Professor Angelica Pesarini, assistant professor in race and cultural studies/race and diaspora and Italian studies at the University of Toronto, will be on campus next Monday, April 17, at 6:30 p.m. in Gearhart Hall 026, to give a lecture entitled "Italy in the Aftermath of Black Lives Matters: Memories, Counter-Narratives and the Resignification of Public Space."

Pesarini, a scholar on Black Italy and co-founder of the Black Mediterranean Collective, will illustrate the diverse protests that have recently occurred in Italy as a reaction or counter-narrative to the murder of George Floyd and the numerous attempts to resignify public space. By exploring media debates and social media reactions, the lecture will underscore tensions in relation to the colonial heritage and racialized ideas of identity and belonging.
