Environmental justice education is absent from many environmental science and STEM-based curricula in the United States from primary education to universities and beyond. ROOTS is rooted in both education and action because Arkansas ranks 47th in education, making Arkansas communities disproportionally impacted by the lack of access to quality education.

ROOTS' mission is to empower historically excluded communities by amplifying the incredible stories of Southern people in the environmental space. Because we believe with representation, and an understanding that they have always been part of environmental history, we'll empower a new generation of environmentalists and reshape the future of environmentalism to one that is rooted in equity and inclusion.

Zero Hour Arkansas' pilot issue of ROOTS zine highlights the fact that the fight for environmental justice is built on foundational knowledge and intersecting struggles to use our individual strengths to work collectively toward advancing the human rights of all people by advocating for one another in education and in all sectors of society.
