The U of A Clinic for Literacy will host its annual Spring Literacy Camp on the Fayetteville campus beginning Tuesday, Feb. 28.

Enrollment is open for "Camp Read-Out-Loud," for kindergarten through sixth-grade students. The deadline to register is noon on Monday, Feb. 27, and the cost is $49. Camp will be held in person from 4-5:30 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays through March 16. Students must be at least beginning readers to attend.

Participants will be paired with U of A students preparing to be teachers. After pre- and post-assessments related to fluency skills, campers will enjoy literacy lessons and games focusing on reading fluency in an engaging and fun environment. Campers will have the opportunity to interact with other students and perform selected pieces in a culminating celebration with parents and guests on Thursday, March 16.

The Clinic for Literacy

The Clinic for Literacy provides opportunities for improved achievement in reading and writing. Teacher candidates serve students through analysis of literacy needs and intervention. Literacy coursework grounded in Science of Reading (SoR) taught at the university is immediately applied through work with students to support school literacy experiences.

The clinic hosts literacy camps for kindergarten through sixth-grade students during the fall and spring semesters. A two-week literacy camp is also held during the summer months immediately before the beginning of the school year. Each U of A candidate providing intervention for students understands the SoR and the challenges students face in learning to read. Candidates use the principles of Response to Intervention (RtI) and how to best use formative assessment combined with evidence-based practices to make reading and writing gains with each student. The goal is to teach students strategies aligned with school-based instruction.

The clinic serves students from multiple districts, private schools and homeschools.

Visit the Clinic for Literacy page for more information. Register for the spring camp through this online application or contact camp director Christine Ralston, Ph.D., at cralston@uark.edu.
