Industrial Engineering Department Head Recognized for Service to National Society

Ed Pohl, professor and head of the Department of Industrial Engineering, has been awarded the Frank Woodbury Special Service Award by the American Society for Engineering Management. The award was presented at the society's international conference in Tampa, Florida, Oct. 5-8.

The award recognizes an individual who has provided outstanding service to the society. Pohl has been a member since 2009, rising to the level of Fellow in 2018. The Woodbury Special Service Award recognizes Pohl for his service as co-editor of the society's journal, the Engineering Management Journal, for the past four years.

Pohl holds the Twenty-First Century Professorship in Engineering. He has served as the director of the Master of Science in Operations Management online degree program and has led several risk- and supply-chain-related research efforts at the U of A.

Before coming to Arkansas, he spent 21 years in the United States Air Force, serving in a variety of engineering, operations analysis and academic positions during his career. His previous assignments included serving as deputy director of the Operations Research Center at the United States Military Academy, as an operations analyst in the Office of the Secretary of Defense, as a munitions logistics manager at the Air Force Operational Test Center and as a B-2 training systems engineer.

Pohl is a Certified Professional Engineering Manager. In addition to being a Fellow of ASEM, he is also a Fellow of the Institute of Industrial and Systems Engineers and the Society of Reliability Engineers. He is a senior member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, and the American Society for Quality. He is also a diplomate in the Society of Health Systems, a member of the International Council on Systems Engineering, the Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences, and the Association for Health Care Resource & Materials Management.
