Arkansas Quartz: Nov. 11, 3:05 p.m.

In the realms of science, art and legend, few natural gem materials embody the breadth of beauty, durability, wonder, history and mystery as quartz rock crystal. Tom Paradise, a geosciences professor and accredited gemologist, will address the intriguing background of quartz crystals from their geologic occurrence in Arkansas, to their gemological importance, historic use in royal jewels and art, and in sorcery, augury and the mystic arts.

Having worked with many of the state's quartz mines over 20 years, Paradise will talk about our world-famous Natural State gemstone. From its origins deep in the Earth, to its use in adornment, decoration and divination, quartz crystals have been and will continue to be cherished, precious objects that satisfy the human need for the rare, mysterious, curative, valuable and beautiful.

Join us on for this public talk that bridges the science of Arkansas quartz to its long, fascinating place in history and legend.

The talk will be at 3:05 p.m. Friday, Nov. 11, in Gearhart Hall 26.
