Engineering Faculty Travel to Monterrey, Mexico, to Connect with Educators

Two professors from the Department of Industrial Engineering recently traveled to Monterrey, Mexico, as part of an effort to recruit graduate students and build relationships with schools there.

Burak Eksioglu and Alan Vazquez traveled to Monterrey and met with representatives from the Universidad Autónoma de Nuevo León. Colleges they visited included the College of Mathematical and Physical Sciences and the College of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering. In addition, they also met with faculty and students of the Department of Industrial Engineering at Tecnológico de Monterrey.

While in Monterrey, the team also met with representatives from the EducationUSA advising center at Benjamin Franklin Library. EducationUSA is a U.S. Department of State network of over 430 international student advising centers in more than 175 countries and territories. The network promotes U.S. higher education to students around the world by offering information about opportunities to study at accredited postsecondary institutions in the United States. EducationUSA also provides services to the U.S. higher education community to help institutional leaders meet their recruitment and campus internationalization goals.

Both Eksioglu and Vazquez gave presentations during their visits. Eksioglu covered the opportunities available with the Department of Industrial Engineering at the U of A and Vazquez shared his most recent research endeavors. It was evident from the meetings that the schools were very pleased that the U of A is interested in their students.

Future efforts to connect with the schools will include an online information session in October to cover the application process and cycles. In the future, additional online sessions will be held to further strengthen the new relationships established on this trip.

About the Department of Industrial Engineering: The Department of Industrial Engineering at the University of Arkansas was founded in 1950, led by department head John L. Imhoff who believed deeply in the global impact of industrial engineering. Today, the department averages over 200 undergraduate students and over 40 doctoral and master's students.
