Adedoyin Abe, Ph.D. candidate in mechanical engineering, has been awarded the Anderson Graduate Fellowship for the 2022-2023 year from Tau Beta Pi, the engineering honor society. Abe will receive funding to pursue her graduate work in surface engineering and lubrication technologies culminating in the completion of her thesis. Tau Beta Pi Fellowships are highly competitive and awarded on the basis of high scholarship, campus leadership and service, and the promise of future contributions to the engineering profession. Abe was one of 31 students selected from 278 applicants for this prestigious award.

Abe graduated summa cum laude from the U of A in 2018 with a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering. She is from Lagos, Nigeria, and is currently a Ph.D. student working under Min Zou, professor and Twenty-First Century Chair in Materials, Manufacturing, and Integrated Systems.

"It is a well-deserved recognition," Zou said. "Adedoyin not only demonstrates outstanding academic achievements but is also very active in professional societies and local student organizations, where she served in several leadership roles. She is passionate about diversity in the STEM fields and frequently participates in K-12 STEM outreach activities. She serves as a role model for undergraduate students from underrepresented groups, and I am proud to have talented and dedicated students like Adedoyin in my group."

Abe is passionate about the conscientious use of resources. Her research focuses on useful surface engineering and lubrication technologies for the mitigation of energy losses. She also studies the tribological behavior of advanced materials: how running conditions affect the wear and friction performance. Abe won the 2019 Platinum award from the Society of Tribologists and Lubrication Engineers for superior scientific and presentation quality. Outside the lab, Abe is driven to create supportive and inclusive environments. She participates in the National Society of Black Engineers and American Society of Mechanical Engineers, promoting diversity in engineering. Abe serves as the Tau Beta Pi Arkansas Alpha chapter Graduate and Scholarship Coordinator. She plans to pursue a career conducting research in the field of tribology and lubricant engineering.

"I first met Adedoyin when she was an undergraduate student," said Darin Nutter, department head of mechanical engineering. "There are just some students that make an overwhelmingly positive impression from the first time you meet, and she was one of those students. I could tell how capable she was and that her future was bright. We are so proud of Adedoyin's past and current accomplishments and know that she will be a leader in the engineering field. I'm grateful that Tau Beta Pi has selected her for this prestigious fellowship."

"Adedoyin is the embodiment of Tau Beta Pi's public creed of 'excellence and integrity in engineering,'" said Alan Mantooth, chief adviser of the Arkansas Alpha Chapter of Tau Beta Pi. "I have observed her interactions with faculty and students as well as worked directly with her in the role of Graduate & Scholarship Coordinator for our chapter. She is professional, thorough, respectful and passionate about her activities. She is a great role model and will be an excellent ambassador for the fellowship program. I'm very happy about her selection."

Tau Beta Pi is the world's largest engineering society and provides more financial assistance to engineering students than any other engineering society in the world. Membership represents the highest honor to be obtained by an engineering student and is awarded on the basis of high scholarship and exemplary character. The Arkansas chapter provides scholarships and travel and project funding for its members. For more information on the Arkansas chapter of Tau Beta Pi, please visit their website.
